It seems more than likely that he was the H.C.Lawrenson named on the Village memorial, A.G. can easily weather to appear as H.C. and the memorial has been subject to repairs over the years. The family confirm that Albert enlisted in the Royal West Surreys.
Albert George LAWRENSON was born at Bellenden Road,Peckham on 8th June 1899 (Camberwell Qtr 3:1899 1D:817), the son of George Albert and Florence Jane LAWRENSON (née BELL). He was baptised in St Saviours, Denmark Park, Camberwell on 28th June 1899. 1901 census...Aged 1 he was at 21 Lyndhurst Road, Camberwell with his grandparents, George and Adelaide LAWRENSON. Also there were his aunt Emmaline LAWRENSON and great uncle Edward WEST. His parents were at 47 Bellenden Road, Peckham:- George A.LAWRENSON,[25] born Brompton, Kent, an electrician; his mother Florence J [25] born Bermondsey; sister Adelaide Augusta (few hours old). 1911 census...He was living with his grandparents, aunt Emmaline and great aunt Ann in London Road, Twickenham, recorded as Bertie. His parents were at The Hall Laundry, Six Mile Bottom, with his sisters Adelaide [10],Florence Lena [6] and Hilda Marjorie [2]. Florence and Hilda both born in Twickenham. It is recorded that one of the 5 siblings had died, appears to be Doris Gwendoline, born Twickenham 1906, died 1908) Another sister, Lilian Elsie, was born in Six Mile Bottom later in 1911. His father died in 1914 and on his "Soldiers Personal Effects" entry, his sole legatee is his mother Florence. |

He enlisted in Hounslow, when resident in Twickenham. His documents do not reveal his war gratuity which would have told us when he enlisted, there is an entry on the page referring to another entry number which does not seem to be available.His pension card is not yet found on line. . Dying of his wounds, and in the absence of his Army records, it is impossible to say exactly where or when Albert was wounded or died. The last action before his death was when the 11th battalion, attacked and took Hustrit after some heavy fighting on 25th, then resumed their advance on 26th to take Avilghem by 4 pm. They were relieved at dusk and proceeded to Knokke and then to Courtrai. |
